If it was up to me: John Egan

by | Oct 23, 2025

John Egan is the CIF’s Executive for Safety, Health and Skills. One of his key objectives is to develop and deliver safety and health policies and initiatives for the construction sector. His primary role is to provide support for Sean Downey, Director of Safety, Education and Training, the CIF Safety and Health Subcommittee and the entire CIF membership.

He says: “I am proud to contribute to the CIF’s endeavours to enhance existing safety and health policies and initiatives for the construction sector – a prime example being the annual Construction Safety Campaign, which commenced on October 13.”

If you could spend a day in someone else’s shoes who would it be?

My youngest daughter Jules. She jumps out of bed early each morning, eager not to waste a moment. She sees every day as an opportunity to do something positive and to enjoy. I think we can all learn from our children and young people in terms of their outlook.

What law would you change?

Waste Management Acts 1996 & 2021. The legal definition of ‘waste’ as per the Act hinders the potential reuse and recycling of excess construction materials for beneficial purpose. Companies should be able to donate excess materials for utilisation by others, including charities. I’d also ensure childcare was heavily subsidised by government and schools better funded. Childcare costs are often prohibitive for returning to work. On a more selfish level, I would extend my annual leave allowance.

What’s your pet peeve?

Resistance to change – as someone who values change, I find it difficult to comprehend others who maintain a more steadfast, obstinate approach and are unwilling to listen to proposals for change.

Favourite website?

I’m hooked on checking Sky Sports each morning for the latest sports results.

Favourite landmark?

The Rock of Cashel – as anyone that has travelled the M8 would confirm, the medieval buildings set on a dramatic outcrop of limestone look spectacular, particularly against the setting sun. It’s such a reminder of our past history and culture.

Who should be more well-known than they are?

The Lighthouse Charity, the CIF Benevolent Trust, the Construction Workers Health Trust and the Construction Safety Partnership. Each of these entities provide immense support to the construction sector.

Who has inspired you most?

Sir David Attenborough. I understand he’s now 99 years old yet shows no signs of slowing down.

If you could get rid of one Irish county which one would it be?

That’s a difficult question for a safety professional, when the expectation is that we maintain an open and collaborative disposition.

What song would you play for the rest of your life?

Haunted by Shane MacGowan with Sinéad O’Connor. Two brilliant Irish artists.

Favourite quote?

‘In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king’. If you find yourself in a difficult situation, your skills, knowledge, understanding (albeit limited) may be greater than those around you.

What emoji should be banned and introduced?

I don’t dislike cats but I don’t understand the use of cat emojis. A more obvious ‘thank you’ emoji would be useful … I would use that routinely for the assistance provided by colleagues.

If you could create any Olympic sport what would it be?

Mindful of Ireland’s success in lightweight rowing, it’s disappointing that single and double skull categories were discontinued after Paris 2024. Even lightweights can be heroes.

What should everyone do at least once in their life?

Visit the Aran Islands for a true Irish experience. I never felt more Irish as when I hurled on the beach at Inis Mór, followed by a pint(s) of Guinness.
