When planning for upcoming construction works, timing is everything – especially when it comes to the integration of temporary works. Despite performing a critical role in the overall project delivery, still we see temporary works only being introduced after key design decisions have already been made. Here, Gary Keenan, Sales Manager at MH International, discusses the value early collaboration can have for temporary works schemes.
With over 60 years’ experience in the construction sector, we understand the value that considering temporary works early-on can have, with a proactive approach contributing to a better all-round design, improved health and safety, greater workflow efficiencies and fewer errors.
Timing, timing, timing
There really is nothing quite as important as timing. Although it seems common sense to include temporary works in the strategy and briefing stages of the RIBA Plan of Works, in reality they can be brought in as late as Stage Four (design) or even Stage Five (build). This can result in considerable issues, not just to the project’s budget but also its carbon footprint and timeline.
As an experienced supplier, we have seen first-hand the benefits of considering and visualising your temporary works schemes early on into a project. For this reason, we always encourage a proactive approach to temporary works and recommend our customers follow suit.

Working together
Enhanced collaboration and communication at the initial strategy stage of a project can help to achieve a better-informed design – for both the permanent and temporary works schemes. Rather than building in temporary works around a final model, the temporary and permanent works can be built together as one.
This not only allows the whole scheme to be visualised in conjunction but also gives teams time to better plan and prepare for any potential clashes, consider design efficiencies and streamline the overall workflow.
Incorporating temporary works early on in a project can also have a positive impact on health and safety, with a clear visualisation of the proposed scheme, allowing contractors to better identify and mitigate any potential hazards and risks.

MH International
By visualising the temporary and permanent together using augmented reality design tools (such as our immersive EVE design solution), teams can better plan and prepare, including being able to foresee any technical challenges or design considerations that must be overcome.
With an emphasis on open collaboration, we offer numerous assets, including AutoCAD and Revit BIM files and comprehensive technical data for our range of equipment, allowing for easier kit specifications.
At MH International, we are committed to providing engineered, bespoke temporary works solutions that transform your vision into reality. With extensive expertise across civil infrastructure and building sectors, our capabilities encompass groundworks support, propping, jacking, temporary access and temporary bridging.
