As the Irish construction sector adapts to more stringent energy performance requirements, the focus is increasingly shifting to the role of controls in maximising efficiency. For builders, contractors, M&E engineers and specifiers, the ability to include heating systems that are both compliant and future-ready is critical.

The recently launched next generation Grant Aerona R290 heat pump is already demonstrating its smart credentials alongside the Grant Aerona Smart Controller. Designed to work together these technologies are enhancing system efficiency and usability with real-time communication, ensuring steady and responsive performance in modern heating systems.

Open loop: Simplifying for efficiency

Many systems are overcomplicated with thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs), multiple room thermostats, and volumisers, which can restrict the performance of heat pumps. Research undertaken by Grant has shown that an open loop system, where the heat pump has direct access to the system water volume, reduces complexity. This allows the Aerona R290 to run steadily rather than ramping up and down, reducing energy use and creating efficiencies.

When building new properties, for a typical two-storey dwelling, Grant recommends:

  • One room thermostat upstairs and one downstairs
  • No TRVs (use standard valves)
  • No volumiser or glycol required
  • Radiators: 4m total of 500mm-high radiators per floor (for an optimal open loop system)
  • Underfloor heating: 177m of pipework per floor with no actuators (for an optimal open loop system)
  • The built-in 9m head PWM circulating pump maintain a 5°C differential between flow and return, further boosting system efficiency

Grant Aerona Smart Controller

Aerona Smart Controller: Intelligence built In

The Aerona Smart Controller builds on this simplified approach by adding advanced communication between the heat pump and the property. Unlike third-party thermostats that merely switch the system on and off, the Smart Controller adjusts the heat pump’s output in real time, based on room temperatures. This delivers a steadier heating, creating greater comfort, and lower energy use.

Key benefits include:

  • 4.5” colour touchscreen interface
  • Remote access via app and web portal (WiFi Hub required)
  • Weather compensation for outdoor temperature changes
  • Built-in support tools for setup and diagnostics
  • Wireless operation up to 100m from the heat pump

While underfloor heating continues to work with Heatmiser stats, Grant recommends specifying the Aerona Smart Controller and matching Smart stats wherever radiators and underfloor are fitted.

Built for Real-World Conditions

The Aerona R290 heat pump is designed for the Irish and UK climate, operating efficiently even in colder, high-moisture environments when supported by best-practice system design. Units within the range achieve A+++ ErP ratings, with SCOPs up to 4.88. While capable of 75°C flow temperature, correct system design ensures a lower, more efficient operating flow temperature is utilised.

To support long-term performance, Grant recommends:

  • Using 32/40mm Alupex/MLCP flow and return pipework
  • Weatherproof external insulation (minimum 13mm thickness, ideally 19mm, using Armaflex or similar)
  • Annual ACF50 treatment in coastal locations as part of routine servicing

For construction professionals delivering housing schemes and individual dwellings, the message is clear. Pairing the award-winning Aerona R290 heat pump with the Aerona Smart Controller utilising an open loop system results in a streamlined and efficient solution in line with building regulations.
